Galaxies Mobile

In this astronomy activity you will create a mobile of the major types of galaxies. Galaxies are groupings of stars. Almost all stars are in located in galaxies. We live in the Milky Way Galaxy. It is a barred spiral galaxy.

Hubble created the system of galaxies that we use today. There are three main types of galaxies in this system. The elliptical galaxies are shaped like elongated spheres. Spiral galaxies have a bulge, disk and halo. Irregular galaxies have no regular shape.

Materials

  • Various colors of construction paper.
  • Glitter
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Glue
  • Scotch tape
  • Two PDF pages of galaxies
  • Square piece of cardboard

Directions

  1. Copy the pictures of the galaxies onto different colors of construction paper.
  2. Cut out each galaxy and write the type of galaxy it is with a felt pen.
  3. Decorate the galaxies with glitter to represent the stars in the galaxy.
  4. Tie a string to each galaxy leaving enough string to attach it to the cardboard square.
  5. Attach the galaxies to the cardboard square randomly.
  6. Hang it to the ceiling so you can see the different types of galaxies.
  7. You can also hang your galaxies to a metal coat hanger to display.
